Offered
Educational Assessments: Beyond the Books offers basic
assessments in the areas of reading, math and writing to determine
academic strengths and weaknesses. Standardized assessments are used to
provide valuable information to pinpoint areas of concern and detail
specific content areas where skills have broken down.
Enrichment for High Achievers: Our
enrichment program focuses on critical and higher level thinking skills
in reading, math and writing. Through creative activities such as
perplexers, creative writing, analogies, and reading comprehension
tasks, students are challenged to “think outside the box”.
Conversational Spanish: A ten-week,
one-hour lesson is offered in a small group setting for students in
grades 1-5. One-on-one Spanish instruction is available as well.
Tutoring:
For many students, a little help from someone other than mom or dad is
all they need. Let us remove the dinner time stress associated with
homework by providing that someone for you. All of our tutors are
certified teachers or are highly trained in their subject area.
Kindergarten
Preparation: Units featuring the highly regarded Land of the Letter
People curriculum allow your preschooler to prepare for literacy. The
content of this program reaches across all subject areas including
science, health and safety, art, math, music and motor skills. Parents
are encouraged to enroll in the first session one calendar year before
entering kindergarten in order to complete the entire program.
Handwriting Instruction:
An overlooked aspect of literacy includes
effective written expression. Beyond the Books offers a research based
proven program aimed at improving the automatic production of legible
handwriting. “Handwriting without Tears” provides systematic
instruction that apply Orton-Gillingham instructional principles.
Pre-Kindergarten through elementary age students learn through various
modalities to include Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Tactile
methods. In addition, the developmental progression of children is
incorporated into the sequence of instruction in order to effectively
teach appropriate print/cursive skills.
Dyslexia:
The International Dyslexia Association defines Dyslexia
as a specific
learning
disability that is
neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with
accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and
decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit
in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in
relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective
classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in
reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede the
growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
If your child seems to be
exhibiting characteristics of dyslexia, a comprehensive assessment
through Beyond the Books can help to provide an accurate diagnosis, as
well as provide specific interventions for improvement. All reading
curriculum offered at BTB is research based and has been highly
recommended by experts in the field for use among students with
dyslexia. Through multi-sensory activities, each student receives
reading instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics skills, fluency and
reading comprehension skills based on the research findings of the
National Reading Panel as necessary for reading success.
